Opening Title Sequences

Saul Bass

Saul Bass is an Award winning film maker, but is best known for his animated motion picture title sequences.

During his 40 year career he worked for some of hollywoods best filmmakers, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. Saul bass was born on the 8th of may 1920 in new york. He began his time in hollywood doing print work for film ads, until he collaborated with film maker Otto Preminger to design the movie poster for his 1954 film Carmen jones. Otto Preminger was so impressed by Saul's work Otto asked him to do the title sequence as well.

Introduction

Welcome to our A/S Media Studies coursework blog which will closely document the processes we go through in the production of our film project. Our brief is to create the opening title sequence of a fiction film of our choice. Jack and I have decided to work within the thriller genre but are interested in blending this with the Horror genre. In class we have watched the opening title sequence to David Fincher's 'Se7en' which we both really enjoyed because of its capacity to draw the audience into its dark, Noir narrative. We borrowed the film to watch the entire movie and this film in terms of its style, cinematography, characters and storyline has really inspired our initial ideas. Also, this week, my grandad who used to be in the police force revealed a collection of post-mortem crime photos including finger prints, death shots and some police documents. I immedietely thought of this project on seeing them and this too has inspired our project development.
